Beverly graduated with a diploma in nursing from Bellin Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Green Bay, and earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing with a minor in Business from the University of Wisconsin, Green Bay. She also holds a master’s degree in Community Health Nursing Gerontology from the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee, and a PhD in Nursing Research, also from the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee. She is licensed by the state of Wisconsin as a Registered Nurse and as an Advance Practice Nurse Prescriber (APNP) as well as she is board certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. She is also the fourth credentialed APNP in the state of Wisconsin.
Beverly has worked as a mental health nurse prescriber on an inpatient acute care psychiatric unit, was a mental health prescriber consultant in a general hospital including ICU, home care, corrections, outpatient mental health, and telepsychiatry. She has taught Pharmacology at the college level and has been on multiple drug company speakers’ programs where she was introduced to the Cytochrome P450 (CYP-450) system. She personally has experienced how differences in drug metabolism change drug efficacy. Her specialty is polypharmacy in frail older adults.
Beverly believes mental health reflects a person's life experiences, genetics, culture, the ways they learned to deal with adversity, the sources where they found joy, and the strategies they learned to address stress. She very strongly believes that biopsychosocial functioning firmly binds beliefs, physical and mental health. When illness occurs, it impacts all levels of function. Pharmacology, drug metabolism related to age, drug interactions, pain, client preference, and organ system damage from substance use are all considered when she prescribes. In particular, she pays attention to the Cytochrome P450 liver drug metabolism pathway that incorporates genetics, the environment, and individual differences in how drugs work.
Fun and joy in life for Beverly comes from playing piano by ear, singing the national anthem at dog shows, sewing, spinning dog hair, weaving, and crocheting. Beverly raises and shows English Springer Spaniels and is an American Kennel Club (AKC) dog show judge.
